1. Interesting to observe she is in full mode or Recovery (sleep) mode

3. Basic muscle physiology describes how a muscle is "all or nothing" - ie. a muscle fiber is either recruited or not.

I was chatting with a client earlier - and he mentioned an infomercial that describes a light switch that you only have to clap your hands to turn the light on or off.
The premise was to allow people not to have to lower themselves towards the floor to turn the light on or off.

Going through a fresh phase of hiring staff at the moment - as we expand the pineapple planet.

1. A question that frequently comes up is "how much do i get paid an hour"

2. There's a great quote
"You don't get paid for the hour -- you get paid for the value you bring to that hour"

I'd even go beyond that.

The lowest paid people in the world think that they get paid for the hour of work. That's why they stay low paid. The person who works at the grocery store thinks he's getting paid for the hours they stand there. And until they change that paradigm they'll always be a low paid 'by the hour' worker.

More successful people think they get paid for the value that they create within that time frame.

The most successful people understand that the time spent is irrelevant, it's ONLY the value. So they no longer think in terms of time -- and if they do -- it's in reverse -- that getting the job done faster is worth more.

If I can deliver the perfect training program to get your result in 30 mins, and another coach needs an hour -- am I not worth more? I can deliver the result in half the time that they can - I should be worth at least twice as much.

In training (and in most things - including business) the result is the ONLY thing that matters -- designing programs or charging 'by the hour' is not thinking about value first. I actually pride myself on making the workouts no longer than they need to be. In my opinion doing an extra set is far worse than not doing enough.

ENjiy workouts that work and deliver results. Don't do workouts to fill in a slot of time.

Oh yeah - I think I can achieve much better results (and Safer) in 15 mins than the vast majority on any trainer doing 60-90+ mins training can deliver.

a.) Muscle failure - can be the ultimate success of a strength training strategy
b.) A level of 'failure' is certainly a part of success - think about any invention, or major breakthrough - has by nature a level of 'failure' as part of the journey towards the Success.

What are your thoughts?

I spent a few moment this morning (post Surf) holding a small rock by the shore.
a.) How hard it was (I slightly stubbed my toe on it initially!)
b.) yet how weathered it was by the effect of the water.

There was this super-hard object, yet it had been molded by the softness of just some water.

To me this is just like QUALITY training!
1. To be hard, you must be molded by softness!
ie. to really get the optimum effect into your muscle, you need a softness applied to your action.

2. Everything should be a harmony - with your muscles powerfully exerting optimum force, and the rest of you soft and in flow
a.) Visualize your favorite world-class performer - and how their performance looks 'soft' as they flow through their movement. (deep down their muscles are 'hard' and working super intensely)

it's the same for all your training. You need to develop the harmony with yourself to ensure the action muscles are working super intensely (hence will give you a muscled and hard physique) - but with a softness that ensure you are not pounding and damaging your body.

Met with Laird Hamilton yesterday (Mr Ocean) - what an amazing energy the man exudes, and an affinity with the Ocean.

Bigger is better - isn't it? Hell, I'm the "Big Kahuna" of Pineapple!

1. Well certainly not anymore now

2. I had a camera crew around today.
a.) Ultra professional - shooting some coverage for a major TV network on the new amazing Pineapple Orchard.
b.) Well they only had a number of tiny (hand-cam) style cameras! I asked them if that was sufficient!
c.) They laughed - as they knew I was alluding to the BIG film cameras - i was expecting to see.
d.) "These shoot far higher QUALITY" - they stated. (Although they did share that when shooting some 'movie-stars' - some of the stars requested they only shoot with the BIG cameras.) - (needless to say - these were the 'pretend' super-stars.)

3. Anyway - as you can see it's not the size it's the quality.

4. This is super prevalent in the fitness world
a.) It's not how BIG a workout is - It's the QUALITY

5. Similarly the size of a muscle doesn't correlate with it's total size and function either.
a.) The QUALITY of the muscle is THE most important factor (unless you want to be a bodybuilder)

We are all essentially 'creatures of habit.' We love the safety net of a repeated pattern. However we yearn for change (as long as it benefits us!)
In a training-sense, we subconsciously favor certain styles of workout (if they are a favorite)

1. Even in a disciplined manner that constructs a balanced training protocol - there is huge risk of oft-repeated patterns and the ensuing risk of overuse.

2. Remember the workout is the stimulus and the adaptation the result.
a.) hence we want variety and fullness of stimulus.

3. Much recent advance in Training methodology has occurred in this vain
a.) With various styles of "chaos" training applied to try and maintain fresh, varied and wholeness of stimulus

Trick or TREAT

Do you get a trick or treat from your workout?

1. Recent research by Maganaris has highlighted how 'traditional current' training has a 'stress shielding' effect on your tendons.
a.) What this means is that as the workload you achieve with your training is transferred to your muscles - your tendons don't receive uniform loading.
b.) Remember the goal is to achieve total uniform stimulation across any tissue to ensure the WHOLE area is strong.
c.) In this instance only parts of your tendon achieve stimulation
d.) and you never know which parts either!
e.) This leads to all number of injuries ranging from "little knicks and crooks" you feel around muscle and bone insertions (that you probably just put down to being 'by-product's" of training - through to inflammed tendons, and even tearing tendons

I have just been reading a study that highlighted when people were given a choice of low-fat food or regular food they ate 32% more of the low-fat offering!

This is bad choice, as these low-fat choices are full of artificial substances and unnatural sugars that actually signal your body to store fat!
I am amazed at how the "low-fat" sticker helps encourage greater consumption. So perhaps I should market Pineapple as "Low-Fat fitness"
Remember it is the nutrient-density that is the critical element for success with your eating habit

Similarly it is the Quality/Density/recovery - summized as "broaching your Volume Threshold" that's the key success factor in training results.

"Ranking of Power" - what is your hierarchy?

My Pineapple twist - is there are 3 levels of hierarchy in life - and you can relate these back to any circumstance in your lifestyle and how much 'power' you enjoy

1. (Top) - Initiate
2. Respond
3. React (bottom)

a.) Any scenario where you initiate (means you are top of the hierarchy.) You have complete control and power over the situation. There is nothing more powerful than that

b.) Responding - means you are making a proactive action in relation to (responding) to the initiative unveiled.
This is strong and proactive

c.) Reaction - places you firmly at the bottom of hierarchy - you are at the beckon of the initiative - and being forced into a means (reaction)

1. I'm sure alot of you have seen the work by Masuru Emoto and water structure - wonderful work he has unlocked.

2. Today - I found a study that has just been completed regarding weight loss and water.
a.) 2 identical protocols except one group drank more water.
b.) Result - The group drinking more water lost more bodyfat & weight!

Everytime i hear or see the word goal - I get a vision of the South American Soccer commentators as they scream in delight at a goal being scored.

In training sense the goal is tO create an adaptation that gets you the result you want

The critical factors for this
THRESHOLD - It must be broached to gain benefit

Remember the body needs to be provoked to the threshold intensity, it's not merely cumulative. Arithmetic equivalent is never the same as biological equivalence - as we are a wonderful DYNAMIC SYSTEM (not a machine)

Not in the gambling sense! I'm talking about over-stimulation and under-stimulation (which probably still leaves you confused!)

1. In a majority of ways we are 'over-stimulated' (eg. too much info) - and 'under-stimulated' (eg. not achieving greater response or results)

2. I believe enormous amounts of training fall into this category.
a.) Too much volume of training - eg. training for far too long, too many reps, sets ...
b.) Very little result and response in response

3. Success is life - success in training is centered on achieving "threshold intensity'
a.) Getting stimulated that forces the body into a positive adaptation
b.) The stimulus must be high quality - extending beyond what you have experienced before
c.) The length of it is not the key. Achieving the "Threshold" is the key factor.

Following on the from yesterday - a tertiary nature of Pineapple philosophy is "threshold intensity" training
4. Stimulus that gets you results, and not fatigue
5. Stimulus that excites and energizes you, not drains you.

Monday Morning Quarterback

I delighted in a live NFL game yesterday. (Chargers defeating the Patriots)

This morning - across the US - the inevitable "monday morning quarterback" stories resound.

Remember no-one/no thing is an island (even the island's aren't islands!) - so whatever 'process' or decision or action that there will be many 'discussions' about - remember it certainly isn't in isolation.

The catch that was dropped could have happened for multitude of reasons - not just the final act of the drop!

My point - is that WE (alas the whole galaxy) is a Dynamic System - nothing is an occurrence in isolation.

In times like these people refer to “lucky” people.

I think luck is a paradox – certainly there are events that occur that are huge exceptions – but that’s exactly what they are exceptions. I think the choice of action is ‘effort’ – which can ensure guaranteed return. (The biggest key is optimum return on your effort – exactly what we practice at Pineapple Fitness)

I recall a conversation I had when I was part of the World Cup South Africa Rugby team with a South African Sports-legend, the golfer Gary Player. He recounts the number of times people would refer to some of his shots that were “lucky” eg. when he holed out from a bunker etc… He very pointedly made the point that his “luck” was a direct correlation with the hours he would dedicate on his practice sessions!

Yes – ‘luck’ may occur – but it is not something we can choose. Effort we can choose and can also make direct correlation to its benefits.

The Power of ONE

One is a very tiny number. However, it can have a tremendous impact on your life.

Make one more call every day at work. One extra call a day equals 260+ calls in a year. How many meetings could you set up with this number of calls and how many of those meetings could you turn into sales? Consider your current conversion ratio and think of the impact on your business.

Invest one day per month developing your skills. Many of the most successful people in business invest in themselves. They attend workshops, conferences, and participate in webinars and tele-seminars on a regular basis. Because the majority of people do not develop their skill, you can quickly out-pace your coworkers and competition.

Read one book every month. Expanding your knowledge will help you become more successful. Read books related to your industry or expand areas of insight to helping you improve your skill in a specific area.

Ask one more question. Before you starting “pitching” your product or service, ask your prospect one more question. This question might give you the additional insight you need to more effectively position your product or service.

Pause for one moment. Known as the pregnant pause, this often prompts the other person to blurt out something they had not intended to say. The secret behind this strategy is that most people are uncomfortable with silence and will begin talking to fill the “dead” air space.

Get to the office one hour early. Remember the expression “The early bird gets the worm.” That one extra hour first thing in the morning can be the most productive time of the day. You have a better chance to reach decision-makers, there are fewer distractions, and you can often achieve more in those 60 minutes than in several hours later in the day.

Send one more email. Sometimes, people need that little push and encouragement to move forward. But, many cases, their time is occupied by other projects and priorities which means they are not focused on your solution. Gentle reminders are often appreciated providing you don’t follow up so frequently you appear to be stalking them. Even though they may not be ready to make that particular buying decision, you will help keep your name in their mind.

Ask one more time for an endorsement or testimonial. Endorsements and testimonials are greatly underutilized by most people in business today. We often ask a client for a testimonial but because they have other priorities, they forget. Call them or send an email and politely request the testimonial again.

Give one more suggestion. Schedule a breakfast meeting or lunch with your customers but instead of trying to sell them something, focus on offering solutions that do not include your products or services and your customers will begin to see you more as a partner than a supplier.

Send one more thank you card or note. Very few sales people make the effort to thank their customers. You can stand out from the crowd by sending handwritten notes to thank customers for their most recent order, meeting with you, or sending an on-time payment. You can also send a note when you see their company mentioned favorably in the news.

Threshold, and specifically "threshold intensity" is a key part of my philosophy & principles.

To create change we need a stimulus above what we already receive to encourage an adaptation to take place. This is 'threshold intensity' - ie a stimulus level that forces your body to change and adapt to a new level.

When you train - the key is this QUALITY, not any quantity amount. Think of it as a "money-making" - ie. when you go to work you don't do it for minimum wage reward, you instead aim for maximum pay per the time you worked - "the money-making zone!"

Your body is the same when you train - it's not amount just accumulating time at very low stimulus (ie. the min. wage) - the only exciting area is when you clinch a highly rewarding big dealS and get maximum $ return - this is the THRESHOLD INTENSITY.

We you are in the THRESHOLD INTENSITY it's like you're in a mini "money-making bonanza" - fill your pockets! Exactly like training - it's continuing at that very instant when your systems are 'enjoying' the optimum adaptation environment - if you stop in the THRESHOLD INTENSITY - you turn off your "money-making" and simply go back to "minimum wage" - you're still applying effort, but getting very little reward.

You see it all areas of business - the key to success by all the high-fliers is their incredible return on their time. Every minute they spend on a business deal, they get optimum $ return.
The Pineapple style of training achieves exactly that - OPTIMUM return for your TIME and ENERGY. (Very concise efforts that achieve the optimum results)

How long is a Training Session

The total comprehension of the Pineapple method and philosophy

Q: I've heard in a previous interview where you mention that billing 'by the hour' is irrelevant when it comes to training people. I just can't get my head around this -- how do you charge people and why isn't time still a factor? Do you call the workouts "mini-sessions" or something?

A: When you want to travel cross country in the USA -- you can choose a flight, or you can choose a bus right?

The bus takes way longer than a flight -- but costs less. It's not about the length of time -- it's about the destination -- the result -- and how it is delivered. In this case -- it's the REVERSE of billing by time -- as the shortest time costs the most money.

A haircut? The barber or hairdresser completes the task and is paid by the task - not by how long it takes. A doctor? Does he or she charge you more if they talk to you for longer? Experts don't get paid by the hour - they get paid by the result.

Back to training - where did an hour of training come from anyway? Is there a science journal out there that I don't now about that showed an hour of training to be more effective than 50 minutes?

An hour is just a measure of time. What you are really doing within that hour is X number of sets of Y number of reps right? Let's say you do 8 exercises, 3 sets of 10 reps each for 24 total sets and 240 total reps.

Then someone else hires you -- and when designing their program you come up with 7 exercises, and 3 sets of 8 reps each. 21 total sets and 168 total reps.

Does the second client get a discount because they did "less"? Of course not. You are using a tool to deliver the result. If you design a perfect program that can be done in 45 minutes -- do you add another 33% more work to fill in the time (and thereby move away from your perfect program)?

You need to change your mindset.

Jim Rohn has a statement that says

"You don't get paid for the hour -- you get paid for the value you bring to that hour"

I'd even go beyond that.

The lowest paid people in the world think that they get paid for the hour of work. That's why they stay low paid. The guy who works at the grocery store thinks he's getting paid for the hours he stands there. And until he changes that paradigm he'll always be a low paid 'by the hour' worker.

More successful people think like Jim Rohn and they think they get paid for the value that they create within that time frame.

The most successful people understand that the time spent is irrelevant, it's ONLY the value. So they no longer think in terms of time -- and if they do -- it's in reverse -- that getting the job done faster is worth more.

If I can deliver the perfect training program to get your result in 30 mins, and another coach needs an hour -- am I not worth more? I can deliver the result in half the time that they can - I should be worth at least twice as much.

In training (and in most things - including business) the result is the ONLY thing that matters -- designing programs or charging 'by the hour' is not thinking about value first. I actually pride myself on making the workouts no longer than they need to be. In my opinion doing one extra set is far worse than not doing enough.

So what do I call a 25 min training session?

Same as what I call a 15 min training session. A training session.

Create workouts that work and deliver results. Don't write workouts to fill in a slot of time.
