New Year's Eve reflections

Not only the end of another year. It's the end of the decade!

1. Where do you want to be at the end of next year / next decade

2. What are you committed to.

Do this
a.) What worked well? - Simply taking the time to identify all of the things that worked really well for me in 2009 means that I can not only repeat these actions but commit to doing MORE of them… and sooner!

b.) What did I learn? - Every single success and ‘failure’ I make over the course of my year teaches me something and, as long as I pay attention to what I’m being taught, I can apply whatever I’ve learned to accelerate my results the next time around. Funnily enough, most people never really reflect on what they’ve learned in the previous year. Maybe that’s why they tend to make the same mistakes over and over and over and…

c.) What will I do next time? - Yes, I ask (and answer) this question BEFORE I set out on my next round of goals and dreams. This saves the make-it-up-as-I-go-along approach that most people seem to adopt on January 1st. By deciding IN ADVANCE what I’m going to do when faced with a certain problem or puzzle I’m going to avoid that reactive knee-jerk ‘thing’ that most people get when faced with a problem. Saves me so much hassle and negativity too!

Here's a secret to get you ready for a slender, toned and shaped 20ten - with the most recent fat burning nutrition study
Med Sci Sports Exerc. 2009 Dec 4. [Epub ahead of print]

1. This study took a small group of trained individuals in a double blind (ie neither the researchers nor the participants knew what they were getting) crossover design to compare a pre-workout protein supplement to a pre-workout carbohydrate supplement.

2. Both groups then completed a high intensity workout.

3. Both groups showed a significant increase in resting energy expenditure for up to 48 hours post workout (as we would expect from the afterburn effect of high intensity training), however the protein group had a significantly higher increase than the carbohydrate group for up to 24 hours.

4. The researchers concluded that timing a protein supplement prior to weight training may be a simple and effective strategy to increase energy expenditure by elevating the post workout "afterburn effect" which in turn could facilitate reductions in body fat mass and improve body composition if nutritional intake is stable.

Bottom line - adding a pre-workout protein supplement will increase the afterburn effect of a basic weight training program significantly when compared to a carbohydrate supplement.

Soccer, Bio-Oscillation & YOU getting RESULTS

Just read a new study - that confirms everything we do at Pineapple, and why Pineapple ensures you get Optimum results.

"Recreational soccer is an effective health-promoting activity for untrained men"
Krustrup et al.
British Journal of Sports Medicine 2009;43:825-831

In the study there were 36 healthy untrained men were randomised into a soccer group, a running group and a control group.

1. Training was performed for 1 hour two or three times per week for 12 weeks; at an average heart rate of 82% of HRmax for both training groups.

2. During the 12 week program, the soccer group improved maximal oxygen uptake (a measure of aerobic fitness) 62% more than the running group. The soccer group also lost an average of 50% more fat than the running group (6lbs vs 4lbs)

3. The soccer group had an increase in lean body mass of 3.75lbs, an increase in lower extremity bone mass, a greater decrease in LDL-cholesterol and an increase in fat oxidation during running at 9.5 km/h. The running group saw none of these changes.

4. The number of capillaries per muscle fibre was also almost 50% higher in the soccer training group than in running. Both groups reduced blood pressure equally.

The researchers concluded that participation in recreational soccer training, has significant beneficial effects on health profile and physical capacity and in some aspects it is superior to frequent moderate-intensity running.

What does this tell us?

Well, think about soccer. The difference is more than adding a ball while running.

Soccer is essentially a form of interval training with functional chaos, ie. multi-directional, multi-movement (jumping, heading, running, sprinting, kicking, tackling, with contact) and multi-planar.

Basically this study shows that interval training, using multiple movements and directions is superior for conditioning, muscle building and fat loss when compared to the same intensity of running.

NOW - yes this moment

1. Great poem I just read called "The Station" by Robert Hastings

Tucked away in our subconscious minds is a vision- an idyllic vision in which we see ourselves on a long journey that spans an entire continent. We're traveling by train and, from the windows. we drink in the passing scenes of cars on nearby highways, of children waving at crossings, of row upon row of cotton and corn and wheat, of flatlands and valleys, of city skyline and village halls.

But uppermost in our conscious minds is our final destination-for at a certain hour and on a given day, our train will pull into the station with bells ringing, flags waving, and bands playing. And once that day comes, our lives will fit together like a completed jigsaw puzzle. So, restlessly, we pace the aisles, and count the miles, peering ahead, cursing the minutes for loitering, waiting, waiting, for the station,,

"Yes, when we reach the station that will be it," we cry. "When we're eighteen! When we buy that new 450 SL Mercedes! When we put the last kid through college! When we win that promotion! When we pay off the mortgage! When we retire! Yes, from that day on, like the hero and heroines of a child's fairy tale, we will live happily ever after.

Sooner or later, however, we must realize there is no station, no one place to arrive at once and for all. The journey is the joy.

The station is an illusion- it constantly outdistances us. Yesterday's a memory; tomorrow's a dream. Yesterday belongs to history; tomorrow belongs to God. Our thoughts

Our thoughts are with those berieved today.

Here's some further poignant thoughts...

What we do in the long run, over time, drip by drip, affects the world so much more than an angry reaction or urgent event.

eg. Smoking a pack a day for twenty years is a great way to be sure you'll die early. Far more likely, in fact, than getting hit by a car. And yet it's so easy to talk to our kids about cars...
When we teach people about our story or our industry our about making connections, the teaching lasts.

Teaching people not only impacts, it changes the world. Teaching about connection and community and science, a little bit at a time, can heal our world in the long run. It doesn't happen as fast as we might like, but it works. Emergencies fade, and in the long run our teaching lasts.

The challenge is in responding with education, not reacting with anger.

Simplicity is always such a key foundation for success.

How do we create progression though?

1. Complexity is the key to progression

2. Complexity creates additional factors and 'overload' opportunities, that will force you to develop new abilities/skills/powers

3. We are such complex dynamic systems - that the progression possibility in a training-sense is endless.

4. The key outcome - is to then be able to perform at seeming simplicity.
a.) Look at a great sportsperson performing at it looks simple.
b.) It's actually amazingly complex, but their achievement level is so high, that they can perform with seeming simplicity.
c.) (they're actually seeking even greater complexity (if needed) to ensure victory.
d.) Think of Kobe shooting the amazing shots he does. It looks fairly simple for him. He's prepared for even greater complexity to ensure victory.
e.) ie. even more challenging twist, off-balance and still he gets the shot off and into the basket!

So how do you progress with your Fitness?
Make it more complex

Make more 'things' work at once

*Combine as many muscle groups as possible
*Work through as large a range as possible
*Activate as much muscle fiber as possible

Once you've done this
* Add mental challenges aswell!

Effect of short-term high-intensity interval training vs. continuous training on O2 uptake kinetics, muscle deoxygenation, and exercise performance.J Appl Physiol. 2009 Jul;107(1):128-38. Epub 2009 May 14.
These researchers compared eight sessions of 8-12 intervals (one minute work to one minute recovery), to eight sessions of 90-120 minute steady state cardio.

Total workout time for the interval group was 80 mins over the 19 day study. Total workout time for the steady state group was 825 minutes. The adaptations were the same in both groups despite the interval training group exercising for one tenth of the time of the steady state group.
